Arlington, Va. - During National Chiropractic Health Month (NCHM) in October, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) will work with thousands of doctors of chiropractic (DCs), chiropractic assistants (CAs) and chiropractic doctoral students nationwide to bring attention to the public health crisis caused by pain, and in particular the overuse of prescription painkillers, with this year's theme #PainFreeNation. The campaign is part of the profession's ongoing efforts to educate the public about the value of exhausting conservative forms of care for both acute and chronic pain before resorting to higher risk options, such as opioids.

Seneca Falls: At its meeting on June 27, 2015, New York Chiropractic College’s (NYCC) Board of Trustees honored Valerio Pasqua, DC, by electing him to the position of Trustee Emeritus. Dr. Pasqua joins Drs. Lewis Bazakos, Richard Carnival, and Nathan Novak, previously elected to this position in recognition of exemplary knowledge, skills, abilities, and outstanding service to the College.

The New York State Chiropractic Association (NYSCA) and the New York Chiropractic Council (the Council) are pleased to report further progress has been made to secure a fair and reasonable chiropractic fee schedule. On July 2, the NYS Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) Medical Director Dr. Elaine Sobol-Berger informed us via letter that some of our recommendations to the WCB were used to modify the proposed Medical Fee Schedule (MFS) Discussion Document. While the WCB did not adopt all of our recommendations, this is a positive step, and we will continue to work with the WCB on this matter.

The NYSCA WC committee would like you to be aware of upcoming changes proposed by the New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF). Please note this will not impact claim submission, but will change the way providers receive information about the status of their claim.

Seneca Falls: At its annual meeting on June 27, the Board of Trustees of New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) selected Dr. Thomas DeVita as chair-elect. DeVita, a 1975 graduate of the Columbia Institute of Chiropractic, NYCC's predecessor, will ascend to the chairmanship in June 2016, succeeding Dr. John Rosa (NYCC ‘92). A private practitioner in Acton Massachusetts, Dr. DeVita has served as a member of the Board since 2004. Previously, he served 10 years on the Massachusetts Board of Registration and Examination.

The NYSCA Executive Officers are saddened to notify you of the passing of Ms. Josephine LaBarbara, mother to Dr. Frank LaBarbara of NYSCA District 7. Visitation for the family is this evening and the funeral mass and internment will be held tomorrow.

With less than three months remaining until the nation switches from ICD-9 to ICD-10 coding for medical diagnoses and inpatient hospital procedures, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the American Medical Association (AMA) are announcing efforts to continue to help physicians get ready ahead of the October 1 deadline. In response to requests from the provider community, CMS is releasing additional guidance that will allow for flexibility in the claims auditing and quality reporting process as the medical community gains experience using the new ICD- 10 code set. There is controversy surrounding the risk of manipulation, which is often used by chiropractors, with respect to its association with vertebrobasilar artery system (VBA) stroke. The objective of this study was to compare the associations between chiropractic care and VBA stroke with recent primary care physician (PCP) care and VBA stroke.

Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court announced it was upholding a key provision found in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) that would allow subsidies to consumers purchasing health insurance in states where the insurance exchange marketplace is operated by the federal government. This latest action by the Supreme Court reaffirms the law's validity and virtually assures uninterrupted implementation of the health reform law signed by the president in 2010.

In lieu of holding Summer District Dialogue sessions, the BPR team is going on the road to update interested stakeholders on the status of the BPR project. Roadshow sessions will be held in each District Office beginning in mid-June and ending the first week of July.
