Q&A with NYSCA 2018 Spring Convention Presenters: Dr. Timothy Latham

NYSCA's 2018 Spring Convention (#NYSCA18) is packed with great educational content and world-class presenters. Join us March 9 - March 11 at Mohegan Sun, to hear from some of the profession’s most compelling thought leaders. Here we pose several questions to one of our featured speakers: Dr. Timothy Latham.

Timothy Latham DC

Dr. Latham's Presentation: "Stress, Posture and Breath: Active Interventions for Modern Living" on Friday 3/9/18 at 4pm and "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Core Stabilization in the Chiropractic Clinic" on Saturday 3/10/18 at 10am. (For complete conference information and schedules, click here.)

How did you become interested in the topic you are presenting?

I’m interested in any/every topic that has the potential to improve my ability to serve my patients! In regards to stress, breathing, posture and core stabilization - these are all areas that are relevant to the type of patients that are presenting to chiropractic clinics. They are topics that often viewed as separate but they are very much interrelated. I hope to help attendees understand the relationship between these areas and how to integrate simple, practical tools into their practice to improve patient outcomes.

Who should attend your presentation and why?
Anyone who incorporates active care and patient education as primary components to their practice.

What about your presentation topic (or you) may surprise people?
The research on both core stabilization and posture is extremely conflicted! We still have a lot to learn about the relationship between core stability and pain, posture and pain, core stability and performance, etc, etc.

Are there any new developments in your specialty/topic area that make your presentation at the NYSCA 2018 Spring Convention especially relevant or timely?
New research is constantly being released on all these topics so my presentations will attempt to bring everyone up to speed on what we know, what we don’t know, and how to translate the research into effective treatment strategies.

What’s your best advice to a recent chiropractic college graduate or someone who has been in the field for several years and is looking for new challenges or ways to expand their practice?
Never stop learning! Expand your knowledge base by studying from different fields - psychology, philosophy, physical therapy, neuroscience, functional medicine, elite performance, etc. No single profession has all the answers!

"A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. They don’t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions, without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one’s understanding of the human experience, the better designs we will have."-Steve Jobs
