Information on 2014 fee schedules posted by Medicare Administrative Contractors (MAC)

The ACA recently reported that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has accepted increased relative value units (RVUs) for the chiropractic manipulative treatment (CMT) codes that are to go into effect on January 1st. However, the fee schedules currently posted by the MACs indicate a decrease in the fees for 2014. It is important to note that the fees the MACs are reporting have been calculated using the information from the 2014 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) that calls for an almost 24 percent cut in Medicare physician payments in the upcoming year.

As ACA noted in last week's Week in Review, Congress passed legislation on a federal budget agreement on December 18th that includes a provision to adopt a 0.5 percent increase in Medicare's physician payment update through the end of March, 2014. Once the president signs this legislation, which he is expected to do, all of the MACs will update their fee schedules to reflect the increase in fees for 2014.  Doctors of chiropractic will  also see a substantial increase to the fees for the spinal CMT codes when the new data are posted.
