As you know from the update we sent yesterday, Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that he will be resigning as Governor of New York. This means that his Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul will become the first female Governor of the State of New York. This transition has raised many questions, so we just wanted to take a moment to answer what we can right now.
Just a quick legislative update as the 2021 legislative session is scheduled to conclude next Thursday, June 10. We have been proactively pushing two bills of interest to the profession:

As you may be aware, in New York there a two-year legislative cycle. As this year is the start of a new legislative cycle, we have new bill numbers for our scope modernization bill. In addition, due to changes in the Assembly, we have a new Assembly sponsor.

The Senate and Assembly returned to session this week to address legislation specifically related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Committee meetings were held remotely in both houses on Tuesday, and then session was held on Wednesday and Thursday.

The 2020 legislative session officially kicked off today with the Governor’s State of the State address. In advance of the address, the Governor spent the previous few weeks previewing 34 of the proposals included in his address today. They include everything from: lowering prescription drug prices for all New Yorkers; a focus on workforce training and development to infrastructure improvements like the redevelopment of Penn Station and introducing high speed rail in New York; gun control proposals; and passing an equal rights amendment in the State constitution.

Tuesday, November 6, 2018 was election day in New York. There were many races to watch during these 2018 elections. All four statewide elected officials, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General and Comptroller, were up for election as well as all 213 seats of the New York State Legislature. There were also elections for a U.S. Senate seat as well as all 27 U.S. House of Representative seats in New York.
In January 2018, President Trump signed into law the ACA-supported "Jobs for Our Heroes Act." The law includes a provision allowing chiropractors working within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to perform physical exams on veterans needing a medical certificate to operate a commercial motor vehicle.
As the second session of the 115th Congress nears the election, members of the House of Representatives and the Senate recently agreed on a comprehensive legislative package to help end the scourge of opioid addiction. The final NYS budget passed both houses late last Sunday night. Despite no significant workers’ compensation reforms being included in the original proposed budget bills, there were many last minute negotiations regarding worker’s compensation reform that we followed closely.
