NBCE Staff Publishes Article on Performance-Based Testing
by NYSCA Staff Writer

Greeley, Colo.— Paul D. Townsend, D.C., the NBCE Director of Practical Testing Research and Development , is the lead author on an article published in the January 2010 issue of the journal Teaching and Learning in Medicine.  NBCE Director of Testing and Executive Vice President Mark G. Christensen also contributed to the article.

The article is entitled “Investigating the Use of Written and Performance-Based Testing to Summarize Competence on the Case Management Component of the NBCE Part IV-National Practical Examination.” The article analyzes results of NBCE Part IV Examination, which includes both written and performance-based components. The results of the study conclude that combining these two methods of testing can produce scores that are more generalizable to performance than when either method is used separately.

Other authors include NBCE Director of Testing and Executive Vice President Mark G. Christensen, Clarence D. Kreiter of the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa and James R. zumBrunnen of the Center for Applied Statistics at Colorado State University.
